This workshop is offered as a 3-hour training for clinicians and is focused on the assessment and treatment of problematic technology use. Given the emergent and rapidly evolving nature of these issues, clinicians can feel unprepared to properly treat their clients. Problematic use of technology is often overlooked and comorbid disorders involving anxiety, depression and attention issues become the primary target of treatment - leaving the root causes unattended.
This workshop provides a framework for responding to a variety of problematic technology uses, including those related to digital media, gaming, Internet use, and pornography. The workshop will discuss the history of problematic technology use, assessment of problematic use, and tools to help families become informed and mindful technology users.
Course Objectives:
1. Describe the trends and the etiology of problematic use of technology. (25min)
2. Describe behavioral use problems through a neurobiological lens. (25min)
3. Assess problematic technology use. (35min)
4. Describe and apply the main intervention strategies used for problematic technology use. (35min)
5. Develop their own strategies to practice mindful technology use. (30min)
